Still waiting for biopsy results

Hi

I have been waiting over six weeks for biopsy results and I am wondering if this is normal now? I managed to contact my consultant's secretary, and I was told the results arrived a week ago, but the secretary couldn't tell me what they found.

It is over two months since my GP urgent referral and I have managed to keep myself busy most of that time, but now I am really struggling - I have already been through one round of cancer treatment so I am very worried.

How can I get the results from the no doubt very busy hospital, even just sight of the results letter (I would be able to understand the report)

Thank you for any advice

  • Hi Kirsty,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear that you have been waiting so long for your biopsy results. Can I ask  if this is the same as your last cancer? Your consultant's secretary is not allowed to give you any idea of your results. This must come from your consultant. With some cancers, they usually hold a weekly MDT meeting, but with others they can be less frequent.
Now that your results have been discussed at the MDT meeting, it shouldn't be long before you get your results. It should just be a case of the consultant finding time to give you an appointment. The MTD meeting is where all the health care professionals who will be involved in your case, get together to decide how to proceed from here. By the time you get your results, they will have decided whether any treatment is needed and if so, what would be the best option for you.

If you don't hear anything soon, it might be worth phoning your consultant's secretary again and asking when your consultant is going to give you your results. They can sometimes be pinned down to a date. Failing that, they can remind the consultant that you are frantically waiting.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

Keeping my fingers crossed that you hear something soon.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you very much Jolamine. Its a different cancer and maybe the departments operate differently too so I shouldn't expect the same care pathway. I will keep trying and hopefully get my results soon.

    Hi Kirsty,

Regardless of the care pathway, you should be getting your results now that they have been discussed at the MDT meeting. Don't hesitate to call your consultant's secretary again and ask when your consultant is going to give you your results. They can sometimes be pinned down to a date. Failing that, they can remind the consultant that you are frantically waiting.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
