Hello all

I'm new to the group.

I'm 52 with a 9 year old and just diagnosed with grade 3 breast cancer.  I'm in total shock as I was sure it was a cyst. Treatment due to start in 3 weeks with 7 rounds of chemo then surgery.

I'm trying to be strong for my daughter (I'm also a single parent), but not sure yet how on earth I'll cope.

Anyone got advice?

  • Hi Yogey

Sorry to hear that you have now joined " the club ". I m similar to u. 51 years old and single mum to 3 boys , slightly older than urs . I was diagnosed in Apr 21 and went thru 6 rounds of chemo , mastectomy and then radiotherapy. Finished last Jan and fingers crossed so far so good !!!

Chemotherapy was actually very doable . I luckily felt OK throughout and could still function. A bit tired some days but nothing too horrendous. I used the cold cap and kept 60% of my hair which was a godsend as one of my boys that's what worried him the most. I think nothing screams cancer more than being bald so if u can I would recommend this. I was always very positive when talking to the 2 older boys , did nt tell my youngest who was 11 at the time as he's autistic and would have just freaked and thought, mum's going to die. I told him I had bad cells and would have some treatment then a bionic boob fitted , which he found amusing. I hope this helps in some way , any other questions just ask !!

Eat well , daily walks , drink loads of water and also gargle coconut oil thru chemo treatment ( stops mouth ulcers ) . You ve got this girl !!

  • Thanks Debbie

That helps a lot . It gives me some ideas.

    Is the coldcap free?

  • Hiya ,

Yes it is but not all hospitals offer the service . You also need to go for a cap fitting before your first chemo as it needs to be the right size on your head to be effective. Depending on the chemo you re having it adds between 30 mins and an hour and half on as you need to keep it on after chemo has finished for a set time . But my theory was I had nothing better to do anyway. It really helped my positivity to stay looking normal. I think everyone should be given the opportunity.

    Good luck xx
