Nipple changes

Hi everyone

First time on here so  please excuse me if I am unfamiliar with the way things work. I had a sentinel lymph node removal and breast conserving surgery to my left breast in early October 22. Surgery went well and they removed a grade one 2.5cm stage 2b invasive cribriform breast cancer and an 8mm area of dcis. They also recommended a 5 day course of radiotherapy in early December which I did and I didn't need chemotherapy. No real snags apart from a small radiation burn towards the centre of my chest that finally seems to be on the mend hurrah! My question is about nipple changes after treatment.  I have been moisturising daily and have now noticed the left nipple is red and seems dry and the left areola appears darker in colour. They are definitely different from the right nipple and areola. Is this usual or should I be concerned about cancer spread or recurrence? I have rung the breast cancer nurses and left a message but they say it could be 48 hours before replying.

Many thanks to anyone who answers, looking for either pointers to ask nurses or reassurance if anyone has met this before.

  • Hello Geewhizz

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently been through treatment fo breast cancer and that you now have some further concerns about your breast health. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious.

You've done exactly the right thing in contacting your breast care nurse for advice and hopefully they will get back to you soon but in the meantime, if you'd like to chat things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm. I'm sure they'll be happy to offer any advice and support they can.

Let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
