Ovarian cyst post menopausal how to get histology results.

In Nov I found I had bad pelvic pains  and ultrasound found a large ovarian cyst and thickened lining of the womb . I was on the cancer pathway saw a consultant  (1) and was due a biopsy of the womb at end of December.  I asked if the cyst could be removed without tests he said no wanted more tests to see what type of operation needed. However in less than 8 days the cyst twisted 4 times , incredibly painful! and needed to be removed by a emergency laparotomy  as it was gangrenous . This operation was undertaken by the duty consultant 2 at X mas the ovarian cyst was 16x10 x13cms and also I neede the biopsy of the thickened lining of womb.

Consultant 1 is a oncology surgeon, consultant 2 is a benign gynaecology surgeon. They are both part of the same NHS trust . I hasd Ca125 tests but for some reason they are not reported on any site I can access.
I have heard nothing about a follow up appointment . I got through to the second consultants secretary who said you do not necessary get a follow up appointment. I pointed out my discharge notes stated the cyst was suspicious and was put though to histology as needed to be covered by the two week pathway. Secretary said she would e mail the second consultant.  Predictably I have heard nothing. What can I now do ? Would it be any worth in trying to get a private appointment with consultant 1. Any other suggestions would be gratefully received

  • Hello Dypsoda and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm sorry to read about your situation. I can appreciate that it must be worrying for you if you don’t feel that your problems are being diagnosed properly and I hope some of our members who have been through a similar situation will come along shortly with advice.

That being said, if you are unhappy with the way you are being looked after by your current medical team you may want to consider getting a second opinion you can find out more about this here www.cancerresearchuk.org/.../different-doctor-second-opinion .

I hope you find the reassurance you need.

    Bes wishes,

  • Thanks . It appears that because I became an emergency, the normal process of having a  6 week follow up appointment was not put in place. . However since I posted consultant 2 has phoned and said still awaiting my results...  the delay maybe down to the fact that  the pathology is difficult  as dead tissue was removed.

The good news was that the sample of the free fluid (ascites)  from the operation site, was tested and did not have cancer cells.

At least I feel I am on someone's list now  but looks like I maybe in for a bit of a wait.

  • Thought I would update you, my histology and biopsy and and  MRI came back with no signs of cancer.

  • Hi so pleased to hear that you have had your results and they are benign. I have had bilateral complex ovarian cysts, It was all a bit unexpected when I was was referred to gynaecology oncology. The oncology surgeon was really good and spent over 4 1/2 hours to remove the extensive adhesions everything was stuck together.  She said most surgeons would have left them as they were difficult. That explained the left sided pain, the recovery took a while due to being open and really bruised.
my  biopsies also came back as benign l was hoping they would but there's always a niggle in your mind that they could be cancerous.
Do take care lm glad you are over the op and recovering well
