Any advice or reassurance

Hello I am 44 yes old, I went to see the nurse two days ago to have a coil fitted and before she started she asked if my smear was up to date, which it wasn't I'll be honest so she said she would do that too. Basically she had to stop the exam as she said she couldn't  find my cervix and apparently on 'first touch' of the exam I was heavily bleeding, I was half way through my cycle so it wasn't my period, she started asking me lots of questions and then said she was going to refer me to the gynecologist and I should have an appointment in two weeks, bear in mind my appointment with the nurse was at 7pm in the evening and the hospital contacted me at 9.30am the next morning with my appointment date. I am now worrying worse case as the nurse wouldn't say anything after she finished examining me, I try to say things like "oh it's just a normal referral then as it's common to not find the cervix " etc and she said nothing. I have been bleeding since the exam with period like cramps and lower back pain. Any advice or reassurance that this is common would be grateful.  Many thanks for taking the time to read this. X

  • Hi Bri1978,

I can understand this causing some concern and I hope you're getting on OK. It is difficult to advise on this, only to say that it is not too uncommon to bleed with a smear test. We have another thread on the forum here which may be helpful to have a look through. You can also search the forum (using the button in the blue bar above) for other relevant discussions on here.

It's good to hear you don't have too long to wait for your appointment - I hope you're able to find out more soon about this. In the meantime, try to keep busy to help keep your mind off any worries.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Thank you for taking the time to reply, I have read alot on here and feel really reassured it's nothing to worry about as it sounds quite normal for cervix not to be visable to nurse and bleeding. Thank you for your help.
