Confused Carer

Hi all, Mum was diagnosed with lung cancer at the beginning of September, unfortunately the diagnosis took her by surprised and she was so upset we just left the clinic without much information. I know she has a tumour on her lung and it's caused a collapsed lung, and that it looks like it's in her nodes in the centre of her chest, but that's it. I don't know what stage we're at, I don't know how long we're looking at or if she will see Christmas. I can't ask the question for fear of upsetting Mum and just feeling a little overwelmed and confused at the moment :(

  • Hello Jaykayl

I'm sorry to hear about your Mum's diagnosis. It's obviously a difficult time for you all and it's understandable that you're feeling confused and overwhelmed right now.

Does your Mum have any appointments arranged with the lung clinic, specialist teams, or the GP? If she does then maybe you could attend along with her. explain to your Mum that you respect her decision to not want to know certain information but it may help you to make sure she has the right care if you were able to talk with the Dr or nurse.

If she doesn't have any upcoming appointments then obviously this makes things a little more tricky. We do have some general information on our website about lung cancer that you may find useful but I'd also suggest having a chat with our team of nurses. Whilst they won't necessarily be able to give exact answers to your Mum's situation, I know they will be happy to offer any information, advice, and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Sending my best wishes,

  • Thanks Jenn,

No appointments now, we have palliative team coming in but everyone seems very reluctant to give any sort of time scales or anything really. Guess I'll just have to wait take it day by day.
