Steady Weight gain since coming off Letrozole 6 years ago

Hello

Its 16 years since my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer and 6 years since she ceased her Letrozole medication. Unfortunately the weight gain has been pretty constant (+2 stone) in that time. Eating a good diet and excercising regularly has had little affect and it gets her down. We are 66 and I know advancing years may have an affect but would appreciate any advice that might bring some hope.

Regards

Charlie

PS not sure if its acceptable protocol for husbands to ask advice for their wives but fingers crossed its OK.

    Hi Durham,

A very warm wecome to our forum. It is perfectly acceptable for husbands, family, friens or anybody who has or cares for someone with cancer to join us on this forum.

I am sorry to hear that your wife is having such a struggle with her weight since having treatment. I am 73 and have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 13 years. I was on Tamoxifen for the first year after surgery, then I changed to Letrozole for 6 and a half years. I stopped taking this in July, 2017.

In that time I gained 6 stones. I tried losing it through diet and exercise, to little avail. Eventually, my GP referred me to a class run by the NHS, for people who were overweight. This was called 'Weigh to go'. We had our waist measurements taken every other week and our weight every week. We would then talk about food - what we could eat, what we should avoid, what to choose when eating out, how to read food labels properly, types of fats and sugars in food, useful food that members of the class had discovered, etc. After this, we would have an hour of gentle exercise in the gym.

Much to my surprise, this actually worked and I managed to lose 5 stones. I still need to lose more, but these classes haven't started again since Covid struck. I have managed to keep this weight off for 4 years now and feel so much better for it. Perhaps your wife could have a chat with her GP and see if there is anything similar in your area?

Please let us know how she gets on. We are always here for you both.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
