Intro - uni student living away from home, mum has cancer

Hi,

I'm Oli.

My mum has been battling cancer for the last couple of years. First, she battled (and is currently in remission from) non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, but now she's battling myeloid leukemia. I struggled immensely with the instability and unknown caused by her treatments previously, and the lack of support for her young adult child (me, my brother is still legally considered a dependent). I am hoping to connect with others in similar situations - uni students living away from home who have a parent living with cancer.

  • Hi Oli,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear of what you're going through and the situation with your mum. I can imagine this must be a lot to deal with, and I completely understand what you're saying about the uncertainty.

You may wish to have a look at Hope Support Services - they're an organisation specifically aimed at supporting young people who have a family member diagnosed with an illness. They have a monitored Facebook group and they can also offer online one-to-one support.

Hopefully this forum here can also be of some help to you - and hopefully you'll receive more replies soon. If you haven't already, you can also browse or search (using the button in the blue bar above) the forum for other relevant discussions.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
