HPV

Hi, I was told i have HPV today! I have 0 symptoms that I know off, no lumps and bumps down there it was found during my first ever screening test!

I'm unsure where it came from and I'm worrying as I have mental health and overthink everything. I have been in a committed relationship for nearly 4 years and as far as I'm aware he has never done anything behind my back. My letter says 'HPV positive result with low cervical cancer rate at the moment and will be checked again in around 11 months. My question is I guess that how can I find out what type it is, am I likely to develop warts and stuff? I did read that HPV positive result means that it's one likely linked to cervical cancer and not one likely linked to warts but I'm not sure if Google is trusted enough!

Any advice would be welcome! Thanks in advance

  • Hi Shels

Most people who have ever been sexually active have encountered hpv-it's incredibly common. The testing is for high risk hpv, which can cause cervical cell changes, whereas warts are caused by low risk strains of hpv. There are many, many strains, and there's no value in knowing the actual strain number.

It doesn't mean that anyone has cheated-the virus can come and go, and be dormant or active in your system. so you could have had it for a much longer time-it's only recently that the screening service has checked for hpv first-before that the checks were for abnormal cells. The good news is that you don't have these, so the standard protocol would be to check you again in a year. In that time, your immune system may well have suppressed the virus and you could have a negative result.

I never recommend Google-it is more likely to give you anxiety than actually help you. Having hpv doesn't give symptoms or lumps-but high risk strains can cause changes to cervical cells. These can be picked up early via the screening process and easily treated if necessary. Having hpv doesn't mean you would ever have abnormal cells, far less cancer so try not to worry about this. If you have any more questions, I'm happy to help if I can. x

  • Hey Shels

Welcome to the forum. If your sexually active, most of us are exposed to HPV at some point in our lifetime. And many of us don't get any symptoms.

Even as a man, I've been exposed. I got symptoms tho when I was 19.

There is many different stains, think over 100. I've looked into it myself.

So no doesn't mean he/she has been unfaithful to you at all.
