Secondary breast cancer

Hi,

I am new to this forum so just introducing myself.

I am going to be having the diep surgery and wonder if anyone knows of anywhere I can get a good nightie what is cool to wear and without long sleeves which seems to be the only thing in the shops right now. Also welcome any advice about any bras post surgery - any advice whatsoever pls - thanks

  • Hi Katlen,

Im sorry to read about your secondary cancer. I had diep surgery last December and wanted a short sleeved cotton nightie. I am sure lots of people try different things, but for me I found some below knee 95% cotton (mostly cotton anyway) button front v-neck nighties on Amazon. They are called Doaraha womens nighties striped. I got different colours and they are a godsend in hospital and when I got home as I could easily just get them on and off.

In respect of bras I got the M&S flexifit front zip and clip fastening ones and again I've been wearing them ever since. They say to go up a size for the op, I did but purchased some in my normal size too and managed to stick with those, but we're all different.

I hope that helps a little and I am here if you want to chat on this or via private messaging.

    Hi Katlen,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I found it difficult to get a suitable nightie when I had a double mastectomy. I eventually got a few in different shops, which opened down the front. I found that these were useful post-surgery, as I didn't have to raise my arms to pull it over my head. It was also useful for letting doctors and nurses examine my post-surgery wounds. With the benefit of hindsight, it would have been much easier to find button through pyjamas, but I never considered this at the time.

You will probably be given a softie to wear for the first while, until your breast heals. After that you should be entitled to get a silicone prosthesis. I don't know how often you get them in England, but here in Scotland I get these replaced every 2 years. I had a large breast and find these very heavy, so I tend to buy a lightweight foam one from Marks and Spencer. These are called breast forms. They are sold singly and come in 4 sizes. The last ones I bought cost £10 each and I can do everything, including swimming in them. The advice given is usually to wear a soft but supportive bra at first and I was advised to wear this day and night, to prevent fluid from building up in the area after surgery.

I am surprised that your breast care nurse has not given you any of this information. It is certainly worth having a word with her, as she will know the procedures in your area. When are you due to have your surgery? I hope that it all goes well for you.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Katlen

    when is your Diep surgery?

I am on a waiting list for right breast Diep surgery. l am expecting it to be after Christmas.

I bought some good bras from Nicola Jane who specialise in post op but also Marks and Spencer's. I was going to find button through pyjamas, but let me know if you find any nighties. I like soft jersey cotton nighties

have you found support for your tummy too?

  • Cheers mickey, & sorry for late reply

the Doaraha nightie's looked good, but I couldn't get in my size but I did find a similar one thanks.

I also got some cropped pj's.

    great advice & tips - cheers x

  • Hi. Silver,

I haven't been given a date yet but I'm down as being a priority.

primark have a new breast cancer section of these soft dusky pink mixture of either pj tops, bottoms & nighties and even a dressing gown & socks. I also looked on Amazon on the advice of another chat member at the Doaraha nighties.

I was advised to look at either primark , matalan, or M&S shape knickers. I got mine from primark as only £5 compared to the m&s ones. Apparently matalan are lower on the belly.

still got to get bras - I'm aware of the reco bras that are good

hopes this helps - I'm the right side too! X
