Fibroid or something else?

Hi everyone

My name is Alana, i was wondering if anyone can help me. When I was pregnant with my now 3 year old they discovered a fibroid. They monitored it throughout my pregnancy and all was fine. For the last year it has given me a lot of pain (assuming it's my fibroid) I was bleeding uncontrollably and in so much pain so I went to out of hours. They gave me pain relief and sent me home. I went to the doctor's the next day and she put me on the pill to calm the bleeding down and put me through for a vaginal scan. I got the scan back in march and a couple of weeks later got a letter saying I'd been referred to gynaecology. Months have now passed and there is nothing from them. Last night I was in severe pain all I could do was cry and roll around my bed. No amount of pain killers were helping. My back my stomach and my legs were just agony. I didn't sleep a wink so I called the doctor this morning. The doctor examined me and found I have a mass the size of a 30 week baby and told me she was going to call gynaecology and get me seen this week as it's a matter of urgency. She has now just called me back and she is really angry as all they said to her was to make me comfortable with medication. She is in disbelief. Why are they not even scanning me to see what it is. Is it possible that it's the small fibroid that they found 3 years ago or could it be something else. My head is all over the place.

Thank you all in advance

  • Hello Alana,

A big welcome to Cancer Chat! Poor you, you have been waiting for your gynaecology appointment for months now and you did well to call the doctor given how much pain you suffered and that it even prevented you from sleeping. A mass the size of a 30 week baby sounds rather big and I can understand why your doctor wanted you to be seen as a matter of urgency. It's shocking that they told your doctor to make you comfortable with medication rather than give you a scan. She sounds like an excellent doctor who takes your concerns and symptoms seriously and I can understand why she is in disbelief. It would be good I agree given your situation to get a scan to see what it is. It might be worth trying to chase your referral or seeing with your doctor whether this could now be treated as urgent?

It's hard to know really what it is, whether it is that fibroid which has grown or something else as the only way to know for sure is to get a scan and get this looked into properly. If you find you are not getting anywhere and you are suffering such intense pain, there is also the option of going to A and E and seeing whether they can help you and look at this closely. Perhaps you could try and see first why it is taking months for this referral to come through and talk to your doctor to see whether you could be seen earlier and your referral could now be prioritised and marked as urgent?

I hope you get seen soon and that you get some definite answers. Hopefully others who have had similar symptoms will be along shortly to share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,
