Pathology results

Hi. I am new here. I am 62 years old. I had 2 breast lumps. Both biopsied and one was ER+ invasive breast cancer and other normal tissue. This one was biopsied again as consultant did not believe result. About 6 biopsies taken from front, back, sides and centre of tumor. The results came back invasive breast cancer but triple negative.  I was started on EC chemo without much response after 2 sessions. Changed to Docetaxol for 4 sessiions. I then had wide local incision. Final pathology after removal showed clear margins and clear  lymph nodes. However this had grown from 13mm to 21mm. Seen my oncologist 3 weeks later to discuss what next because residual Tumor after chemo.  Oncologist advised Tumor was not tnbc but actually ER+ so no more chemo required and this is why chemo did not work. While I was relieved I am also struggling to get my head around the difference from core biopsy to final pathology. Has anyone experienced this. I feel I have gone through chemo with all the side effects for nothing. Crying a lot.

  • Hello Jfp

What a rollercoaster you've been on these past few months! Not just one diagnosis of breast cancer but two. Then going through chemo and surgery and then being told that one of your original diagnoses was in fact a different type of breast cancer. But also that your margins were clear and that that there was no sign of cancer in your lymph nodes. I think it's perfectly understandable that you're feeling emotional at the moment!

I know that we've had ladies here in the past whose initial biopsy and scan results didn't then match the pathology results. When you've gotten your head around one set of information, to then find out that that was incorrect and in fact, the results are something different, it can leave you feeling all sorts of emotions.

At times like this, it really can help to talk things through with someone. I'd suggest giving our team of nurses a call in the first instance I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice and support that they can. Alternatively, you may want to contact your local Maggie's centre or you could speak to your BCN to see if there is a counselling service available.

The most important thing in all of this is that you're kind to yourself Jfp. You've been through so much, physically, mentally, and emotionally and it takes time to adjust and find an even keel again. Takes things a day at a time and lean on those around you for support, love, and friendship.

Keep in touch and let us know how you're doing.

    Best wishes,
