Vasculitis GPA and lung cancer

Hi, I am looking for advice and support regarding my Dad who up until may was a fit and healthy 59 year old, never smoked and went to the gym. Then suddenly he came down with an ear infection that got so severe he had to go to a&e, he ended up in hospital for 6 weeks where they diagnosed him with vasculitis GPA. Now last week after a consultation follow up from a lung biopsy he had previously had 6 weeks ago he got told they have found small cell cancer. We are all extremely surprised as we got told the shadows on his lungs looked to be just vasculitis. Now we're awaiting a cat scan so drs can see if the cancer has spread and work out what is cancer and what is vasculitis in his lungs. He currently on steroids and cyclo chemo for his vasculitis. His kidneys are damaged too from the Vasculitis. I've so many questions and just wondered if anyone has had both before and what treatment they were aloud to have? Drs are puzzled themselves which makes us more nervous about what's going to happen next. He is responding well to his vasculitis treatment but cannot stop any of that medication.
thank you

  • Welcome to the Cancer Chat community Nattyelena although I'm sorry to hear your dad has been diagnosed with small cell lung cancer.

Hopefully some of our members who have contended with both will be along soon to share their experiences and advice but whilst you wait you're very welcome to talk this through with one of our cancer nurses on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very knowledgeable and will do all they can to answer your questions and support you at this time.

I hope your dad won't have to wait too long for his scan and that the results show the cancer hasn't spread.

    Best wishes to you both,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Hi, I would like to update that my Dad got his results saying there was no cancer cells ! It took ct scans and another biopsy. Apparently the vasculitis was pushing on his lymnodes making it look like cancer cells. I wanted to leave this comment incase anyone else ever goes through a similar situation. It was a very scary 6 weeks of the unknown and being told it was cancer to then finding out it wasn't! He's doing very well on his vasculitis treatment now and of course we're extremely relieved of the news.
    thank you
