Hi,
I've just read some of your other posts and can only reiterate what others have said about not getting hung up about numbers! The way people and their cancers respond to treatment is not an exact science as there are so many variables!
I was diagnosed at stage 4 back in 2013 and I'm still here to tell the tale, others more recently diagnosed at earlier stages have been less lucky.
Despair is a killer as it makes people give up hope which can lead to decisions which shorten their lives. A colleague back in 2013 called me foolish for undergoing chemo instead of enjoying what life I had left to the full. If I'd listened to him I'd have missed out on 8 wonderful years of life with my wife and family.
Come here to sound off and share your frustrations and fears - this is the one place where many people will genuinely know exactly what you are going through and can empathise rather than sympathise.
Best wishes
Dave
Hi Dave
I don't want to sound like I want to give up all hope I am so happy to hear your.news and others that stage 4 is not a death sentence,
i couldn't help but google and was terrified to read that if you are stage 4 with breast cancer it says survival is only 3 years...
I want any and all treatments they offer me so I can live... I know chemo will be awful but it's just something I will do
thank you so much for your kind words
Sorry for the delayed reply, I caught Covid at a CRUK event!
Statistics are fine when dealing with hundreds of cases but absolutely useless as predictors for individuals.
Average survival of 3 years is exactly that - an average. So statistically half of those patients will live longer than 3 years and half less. Those living less include those who don't have treatment, very old people who might have died anyway, people with lots of other things affecting their health etc. Interestingly, people like me are treated as outliers and excluded from the statistics as we skew the results.
I hope this makes the stats seem less scary!
Best wishes
Dave
