My tonsil cancer journey. Don't give up!

if you’ve just been diagnosed with tonsil cancer, be positive and do not give up. It’s a long and difficult journey but you can do it.

The side effects from the treatment can be pretty bad. Mine are no saliva, very painful mouth, throat and tongue, fibrosis in the neck, nerve pain, headaches, instant menopause, breathing problems, chronic fatigue, taste change, severe trismus, hearing problems, can no longer sing , damaged immune system (from treatment) and getting my teeth cleaned at the dentist is like torture.

if I could advise you to do anything it is rest it will knock you for six. Massage scars with bio oil to help them heal.  Stretch your jaw and neck during and for a long time after treatment, if you have a feed tube, try to get eating as soon as you can, build up your tolerance to different foods. Things like bread, pastry and meat are awful to get down with no saliva. Water becomes your best friend. Sleep well, try to be active, eat well and look after yourself.  Recovery takes time, I’m still recovering 5 years later . More than anything you need support from your friends and family, don’t be afraid to ask them for help.

i am 5 years post treatment and some days are a struggle. At least I am still alive but haven't got the quality of life I would like since cancer treatment. I haven’t been able to work for five years.

I wish you all good luck and good health.
