Anxious after smear

Hello everyone, thanks for reaidng my message. I'm 30 and have had yearly smears due to high risk HPV positive result for the last two years, thankfully no cell changes at either smear. I went for my annual smear today  thinking nothign of it but it was really quite traumatic, I bled a lot and the nurse suggested that by looking at my cervix I will be referred for colposcopy but that it will be a month wait on results in any case, the said he was surpised that my previous results had only said HPV.  I have an ectropian - probably due to being on the combined pill so I thought that some light bleeding might happen - it has before, but this was a lot and the nurse seemed concerned. I feel really wobbly. I have been having pelvic pain for about a month now, but i get pelvic pain somtimes and I knew I had my smear coming up so was trying not to worry about it. I don't really know what I'm looking for but was wondering if others had had similar experiences and that if colposcopy is next what to expect from it?

Thank you El x

  • Hello Elbea and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry your latest cervical screening was quite difficult. Cervical screenings can be very challenging and I know it must have been quite scary when the bleeding was more than anticipated but if you can, try not to think the worst or jump to any conclusions until your results have come through.

I know that is easier said than done, but many of our members have been in similar situations so you are not alone and hopefully you will get to hear about their experiences and receive some support and advice from them soon.

If your results show you do need to have a colposcopy, you can find out what will happen just here.

Our team of cancer nurses are available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m if you'd like to discuss this further.
