How do you manage Lymphedema?

Hello everybody. I completed my treatment in 3rd week April 2022 - it was a combination of radiotherapy and Chemo. I noticed i started having swolen jaw about 2 weeks ago. I was informed it is lymphedema.

I have been watching youtube videos to know how to massage it.

Please has anyone here had the experience?

How long does the swelling take to retrun to normal?

Is there any medication i can take to help reduce the swelling?

Thank you

    Hi Sulukaleni,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I have bilateral lymphoedema in my arms, following a bilateral mastectomy 13 years ago. I attend a local lymphoedema clinic for 2 weeks in every 12 and have manual lymphatic drainage, performed by a  nurse, who is trained in this technique. I did initially get taught how to do this myself, but I wasn't very successful in getting the swelling down. I now wear compression sleeves from shoulder to fingertip on both arms and, although this has controlled it to a degree, I am afraid that it has never gone away.

Are you living in the UK? These clinics are throughout the country, so you would find it helpful to get referred to one. These are the people with the experience of all types of lymphoedema, so they should be able to give you the advice you need.

I hope that they can help.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
