Armpit lump

I've had a lump in my left armpit for 6months now, I've only just plucked up the courage to ring the doctors for an appointment. I've managed to somehow get an appointment on the same day as phoning them. I'm so nervous to go :( so scared of what they are going to say or do. I just don't know what it could be, there's loads of things that I have read what it could be; Cancer (loads of different kinds), reaction to covid booster (very unlikely as it's been 6months since my jab), hormone imbalance, cycst etc. The lump I have is not painful at all (sometimes it does make my shoulder/collar bone slightly ache). I'm 29 I don't think I have any cancer history in the family but then I don't really know much about my family so it doesn't really help. If anyone has anything similar please share your story. Thank you

Edit: I have been for my appointment today and the dr could not feel anything an did a thorough breast check. She couldn't feel anything where I've been feeling the lump and just thinks I'm feeling muscle. I sort of feel reassured about it, and just going to see if the lump I'm feeling goes. She did say if anything changes to go back.

Thank you to anyone who read this

  • Well done for getting in touch with your GP about the lump in your armpit Petal.

It can be scary when unexplained lumps and bumps appear but you should be very proud of yourself for seeking out medical advice and I hope you can be reassured by what the doctor has told you.

Hopefully the lump will go away on it's own but if anything changes or gets worse then do go back to your GP.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Petal,

It's reassuring that your GP couldn't find anything. I assume you pointed out the area where you're feeling a lump but the doctor couldn't feel anything there? Did they indicate or say what muscle / bone it might be?

I might be wrong but from reading your message it feels like you're not totally reassured? That's not good! Obviously you don't want this to play on your mind if you have any lingering concerns. It's probably nothing if the GP couldn't locate it - perhaps give it a couple of weeks and see if that helps. However, if you're still really not sure and feeling a little questionable about the decision, please don't hesitate to get a second opinion if you think it would help. Just don't tell the doctor it's a second opinion so they can give it an unbiased examination.

Sometimes it can be difficult to differentiate between lumps and muscle. Especially if you haven't really checked that particular area before and you're unfamiliar with what it's supposed to feel like. I've had this issue myself and it's not nice.

Best of luck and I hope it goes away on its own soon.
