Endometrial Cancer stage 4b and Surgery

Hello everyone Im a 76 year old lady I have endometrial cancer stage 4b I have had 4 sessions of chemo Placitacil and Carboplatin. Had a CT scan after 3 sessions and the tumours were responding well and were shrinking. I saw a surgeon yesterday and he is happy to carry out my surgery, which is a full radical hysterectomy and the removal of my omentum but before he does this operation he's going to check my abdominal area, I think to see if it has spread anywhere else. The CT Scan didn't show anything but he said sometimes it's microscopic cancer cells that don't show up on a CT scan. So I have now cancelled my next chemo session on my surgeons advice to build my strength up for this exploratory laparoscopy keyhole surgery, should be sometime this month, then the hysterectomy and omentectomy if everything is ok. He did say something very odd " you do realise even doing this surgery may only add a few more months to your life expectancy,  which is about 21 months"  How is that possible if the curse is being removed,  we are all unique and respond to things differently. I thought if surgery is carried out and all the cancer thats visible is removed and I take my last 2 chemo treatments I would have a better prognoses. Please has anyone had surgery and how have things gone with them. I feel quite positive and I feel if this surgery is done I will have a better chance of making it maybe longer then 21 months ,  or am I wishful thinking

  • Hello Scarlett1945

I'm sorry to hear that your recent appointment with the surgeon has left you feeling unsettled and with questions. I know from the many posts that I've read here over the last 9 years that having a positive approach to treatment can make a big difference in people's lives. So keep that positive mindset ahead of your surgery. Hopefully you'll be able to build up your strength and get yourself as well as possible over the next few weeks.

In terms of the comment that he made about prognosis and your questions about the planned treatment, I'd suggest giving our team of nurses a call. I'm sure they will be happy to talk things through with you and offer any information, advice, and support that they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch Scarlett1945. Let us know how you're getting on over the next few weeks and we'll do our best to support you through this next phase of your treatment.

    Best wishes

  • Hello dear Jenn thank you for replying to my post. I do have a positive attitude and I was insistent on surgery thinking I have a better chance of fighting this by getting it out of my body. Maybe he the surgeon was giving me statistics.  I'm having my pre op on the 17th June things are moving quickly, so hopefully the keyhole investigation will be soon too. I have had cancer before in 2007 Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma stage 4 I seem to like the number 4 .... after 4 months of chemo R-chop which was given to me every 14 days as I was fit lady age 61 in every other way I was given the all clear It never came back. But here I am again wearing the tee shirt.   This endometrial cancer was grade 1 and stage 1 in November 2021 then in 4 months while waiting for the hysterectomy it went onto my omentum and hysterectomy was aborted   I will phone to chat with someone on the number you so kindly gave me. Thank you so much again Jenn   God Bless  Scarlett 1945

  • Hello Jenn  how are you.Wanted to let you know how things were going for me. I had the assessment keyhole procedure my surgeon took biopsies of every lump and bump he came across took a large biopsy of my omentum again that had the disease,  adenocacinoma that's what changed my grade 1 stage 1 to a stage 4B .Anyway I had a follow up consultation to see my surgeon gynocologist oncologist he was so pleased to tell me there was no cancer in any of the biopsies.even the new one of my omentum had no cancer the chemo had cleared it all up.  The tumour in the womb has responded well too.   I had 1 more cycle of chemo only the Carboplatin drug as the placitacil caused peripheral neuropathy. I am having surgery on the 1st September radical hysterectomy and the removal of the Omentum. I'm still being told this cancer may come back and the median survival is 21 months. I pray my surgery goes well. I have read it's a very painful procedure,  the removal of the Omentum. I will cross that bridge when I come to it. There's painkillers I'm sure that will help. Will keep you updated Jenn. God bless Take care Scarlett. X
