Waiting for first Chemo anxious

Hi first time posted.....have grade 3 breast cancer and waiting for chemo .....reading posts have really helped me so far.... I have long hair at the moment past my shoulders how short should I cut it before session?....I have had first oncology but no other info yet .... I have bought a thermometer and am looking at hats ...feeling anxious .....

  • My wife is a month out from finishing her chemo for grade 3, triple +. She had 4 cycles of EC, and 3 docetaxel. The 4 EC's were given every 2 weeks, and the docetaxel every 3 (or that was the plan, but she got shingles, then covid etc during the latter chemo). The Ec chemo she found to be a lot more tolerable than she thought it would. Compared to the docetaxel it was a walk in the park.

Chemo is accumulative, so the chances are, you'll be fine on the first 2. Then the side effects may become more obvious thereafter. She was fine on the first 2, and dare i say it, kinda normal. But she was tired.

She did the cold cap for the first 2 EC's and then stopped it as her hair was thinning, and she assumed she was going to lose it eventually. Weirdly, she stopped it, and she kept what hair she had. She did shave it down, but her scalp was still showing a lot of hair. She never lost any more. so even those 2 cold cap sessions helped. We were surprised.

Your thermometer will be your most important purchase, so that's good you got one.

If your mouth starts to feel the effects of chemo, I recommend buying a bona fide baby toothbrush and if mint starts to hurt you, you can get mint free toothpaste from Amazon. But seriously, look after your mouth, and by that, i mean if it starts to get uncomfortable, get on top of it right away as it can stop you from eating. Also use alcohol-free mouthwashes as normal mouthwash will really dry your mouth out.

  • Hi Thankyou for replying with some good advice ..

srry to hear your wife got shingles and covid must have st her back ... . tooothbrush and mouthwash wasn't aware of how my mouth would feel....thankyou

  • Your mouth may be fine. Chemo and its side effects can be an individual thing. so what she got, may not be what you experience. Just be aware for any changes in your mouth because as they say, forewarned is forearmed.

The toothpaste should you ever need it is called Oranurse. It's made for people on chemo, folk who don't tolerate mint, dislike it or find normal toothpaste too harsh even without ever having been on chemo. It's good stuff.

You'll probably also be told this by your nurse, but do take 2 paracetamol an hour before the cold cap as that will help stave off a raging headache. It's easier to control a headache before it sets in. But some people don't get told this by the chemo nurses.
