Seroma and haematoma after mastectomy

Hi, I am new to this site, and wondered if there was anyone who had or is suffering with problems after single mastectomy. I had my op on the 2nd February this year, right side mastectomy, I left hospital the day after with my drain tube in situ. It was removed one week later on the 9th Feb. My dressing was removed on the 15th Feb. Since then I have had to have my wound drained 5 times.. On the last occassion it was decided that we leave it and dont drain it, and it should be absorbed into the body in 6 months time. it apparently is clotted,  and consequently is very hard and uncomfortable, It doesnt appear to be going anywhere atb the moment and I just wondered if there was anyone who had had similar problems

  • Hello BerylAnn and welcome to Cancer Chat,

I am sorry to hear you have been suffering with problems after your mastectomy and I hope that you will hear from others here who have suffered similar issues. Poor you having had to have your wound drained five times since 15 February and that is is clotted, hard and uncomfortable. This is definitely something to flag with your medical team if you haven't done so already or if you feel it worsens in any way.

Don't hesitate also to give our cancer nurses a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 if there's anything you'd like to talk through with them. Their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope that you can get this looked into soon and that others who have faced similar issues will come and share their story with you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Lucie,

thank you for kind reply. It would be nice just to know if anyone else has or has had this problem and if I could get a rough time line as to,how long it can take to actually be absorbed by the body. I had breast cancer 15 years ago and never expected it to happen again, but hey, these things happen, and we deal with them as best we can. Here's hoping someone can help. Again, thank you.
