Colposcopy not available until July/Aug. Should I go private

Hi All

I had my routine cervical screening on 29th January. Results were high risk HPV & abnormal cells on March the 11th. I called today to find out where I am on the waiting list as waiting 7 weeks. They done expect to give me an appointment until the end of July/ August. 22 weeks at least from the 11th March. I'm concerned. Should I go private?

Thanks

  • Hey! I had my smear on 20th April and got a letter back yesterday saying it was high risk moderate - haven't received an appt letter yet but hoping it won't take that long. I'll have to go private for my own sanity if so, I've literally barely slept overnight with worry!

I had a smear done last year which showed HPV but normal cells, can't help but think it's gone this bad after only a year.

Have u decided what you are going to do yet xx

  • I'm going to phone GP Monday & discuss with them. Think I'm just going to go private though. Less expensive in London than Glasgow Edinburgh so might make it an excuse for a long weekend. The difficulty will be if I need treatment then can I skip the waiting list, would hope so as to get this done privately could be 4k. Does seem unfair those those who can't afford but I'd hate myself if there was something wrong and I'd waited.

Hopefully the back log will be cleared for you! Worth phoning the waiting list administrator. I called when I first got the letter and they advised 10 weeks then which seemed OK. This week advised 22 weeks.

    Good luck!

  • Hello their. In my opinion I think you should go private. Its far to long to wait..I'm affraid that's the state of the NHS at the moment.Iv now taken out private health cover and feel much safer in their hands.Had to have an MRI and the NHS waiting was 6-8 weeks but I had private health insurance and I got my MRI the following week. All came back ok but would of worried for weeks if I had waity on the NHS. So YES I would definitely consider private.

  • Hi x aww bless you, you sound so stressed x I had my smear.. and got my letter back just Saturday gone (I waited 5wks) I am HPV positive with borderline cell changes to my cervix. It says I should receive a letter within 14 days but I'm not holding my breath! Ha ‍ unfortunately I can't afford to go private so will have to wait.. but I think if your that worried just go private but if you can then try and wait a few weeks. But that is a long time to wait in my opinion especially if they've said you are High risk like your health is the most important thing x (hug) x I would make an Appointment to speak to your doctor and ask what they recommend x Hope you get sorted soon x

  • I just got my appointment through today for my colposcopy and I only got my letter back for my smear test results on Saturday so I think that's quite quick ? and my colposcopy appointment is for 20th June.. I wasn't worried until now as I no people on here are waiting much longer for there's.. x

  • I had my colposcopy on 24th June NHS. Results last week as CIN3 & booked for treatment on 23rd September. Such a long time from 29th January. Hopefully all will be OK on 23rd. Might try and get cancellation before then if its possible.

Hope everyone else has got on OK. :)
