Grade 3 Thyroid lump - what is the vocal cord check like?

Hi everyone, I have lurked on here for a while since finding the lump on my thyroid back in I think June time. I eventually went to the doctors at the end of September, & was referred to ENT.

Was found to have a 3cm lump on the right side of my thyroid, and was sent for a FNA towards the end of October. I never heard anything back for a long time so assumed all was well. At the beginning of December I rang the hospital to see if they had my results, & was informed I'd to go on Christmas Eve. Was told then I had a grade 3 tumour & would need partial thyroidectomy to find out for sure if cancer. Then on Christmas Day I caught Covid (all was well I've ctually had worse colds) but then missed my pre op as I was isolating.

Never heard anything back from them so rang again to be told they had to wait so long after Covid due to risk of blood clots on lungs. So I informed them I was on holiday for 2 weeks in March so needed to be fit to drive.

They have just rang me to ask me in next Thursday for a vocal cord check, & to say my surgery is scheduled for the 8th April.

I'm feeling pretty good about it all & not overly worried about the results or the surgery. However I'm anxious about the vocal cord check, as I've heard it's a camera down the throat & I have a terrible gag reflex. Has anyone had this test & can tell me it's not as bad as I imagine?

Thank you

  • Hey Leigh, it looks like we had our surgeries on the same day - hi fellow hemithyroidectomy buddy  How has recovery been for you so far? I am a little worried about my voice; it sounds ok overall, but I can't make high pitched noises, which is worrying me a little! I try to scream, but no sound comes out. Have you found anythign similar?

  • Hi Hope you're doing well? My voice was croaky for a good 2 to 3 days but seems OK now. I can make high pitched screams but I would say I have no power behind my voice at the minute and maybe slightly lower pitched, but my surgeon did say mine was a textbook surgery and he hadn't damaged any nerves. From everything I've read it should all return back to normal within a few months.

I found I couldn't sleep in my bed at all as it hurt my wound so slept on the couch fully propped up. I have managed last 2 nights to sleep in bed though and my throat has finally stopped hurting. I do however have a slight redness and swelling around the wound so think I may have had a small infection.

I'm not in pain now and started driving on Saturday although only a very short distance and can be a bit painful at junctions when checking for cars.

I would maybe get in touch with your surgeon if you have any worries

  • I'm feeling really good now. Going back to work on Friday.

I've not had anyone check up other than a call from the thyroid nurse last Wednesday.

I've a telephone appointment on the 12th May for the results.

I only had thr dissolvable stitches woth nothing on top. Have about half of it still scabbed over but there's not really any pain now. I did get sent home with an antibiotic cream to use for 2 weeks, I'm going to pick something up woth vitamin E added on the weekend to rub on my scar

  • I'm glad to hear you're feeling good!

No, me neither - I haven't had any appointments or anything since. I have my appointment to get the results in May too, and I'm starting to feel the anxiety set in. Trying to keep myself distracted.

All the best with your return to work :)

  • Hey, did you get your results? My lump is out as of a few days ago and the surgeon said he would ring me next week. I was feeling hopeful but he said on removal everything was sticky which can be cancer that is invasive. He also said thyroiditus can make it sticky and in my biopsy they mentioned thyroiditus. He's dashed my hopes but I'm trying to think it's still could be nothing

  • Hi it's 5 weeks today since my operation. Physically in myself I feel good no pain anymore or anything. I was supposed to get a phone call yesterday with my results, which I already thought was in bad taste that it didn't warrant an actual appoinment. I really don't want to be told IF I do have cancer while at work over the phone. Anyway I got a letter on the weekend saying this had been cancelled & I have to wait for rescheduled appointment.

I am giving them till middle of next week then I'm going to start chasing them as this to me is unacceptable.

He didn't give any indication of anything after the op just said it was a straight forward removal & I would get results in 4 weeks.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you

  • Thank you

Let me know how you get on. Hoping all is good for you as well x

  • Hey,

Did you get your results yet? Mine weren't back last week and I called this morning and they said they still aren't ready. Before the op the surgeon said he normally has results in 7 days so not sure how to take this. Trying to hope no news is good news...

  • Hi yeah I finally got a call from the thyroid nurse yesterday. Apparently the reason it took over 6 weeks as my consultant has left.

They haven't actually said one way or the other again though. She said there was definitely some 'suspicious' cells which we already knew from my biopsy. Then she said they got it all so I just need to go for a follow up ultrasound in a year.

My consultant told me histology took 4 weeks anyway so would assume this was across the board. So really I would try and not worry about not hearing yet

  • Hey,

I'm glad you finally heard. Strange to not have a yes or no but I think in the grand scheme of what it could have been that isn't such a bad outcome? Mines been 2 weeks so far. Keeping everything crossed still and hoping that my bad feeling is wrong and just because of the situation I find myself in. Take care and I will keep you posted

  • Hey,

I just got my result, benign!!! and I've been discharged. So so happy and after 5 long months it's hard to believe :D I'm over the moon

  • I'm delighted for you; that's great news.

  • Hi [@MargaretMary]‍ [@Leigh74xx]‍ [@Butterfly22]‍ It’s so good to hear a benign result. I had oestrogen receptive breast cancer back in 2019; had a double mastectomy and ovaries removed and got the all clear just before the pandemic. Unfortunately, given the situation, I didn’t receive any follow ups. So, when I started experiencing back pain I went to my GP, who seemed to take it all very seriously and sent me for an MRI whilst also putting me back on the cancer pathway. That was in February.  Anyhow my scan showed no malignancies but picked up that a thyroid nodule that had previously been spotted (news to me) was now enlarged. Sure enough, when I looked in the mirror a 2inch lump on the left side is clearly visible. It’s hard and painless but moves up and down when I swallow and talk. I can’t believe I missed it. So, after another long wait, I’ve now got my biopsy results and it’s grade 3 which feels pretty inconclusive. Surgery is being scheduled for ‘within 4 months’ possibly the end of August. I’m so tired of all the waiting and worrying. This post with the good recoveries from surgeries and the good news at the end is reassuring so I just wanted to thank you and say hi.  Please keep me updated ️
