Grade 3 Thyroid lump - what is the vocal cord check like?

Hi everyone, I have lurked on here for a while since finding the lump on my thyroid back in I think June time. I eventually went to the doctors at the end of September, & was referred to ENT.

Was found to have a 3cm lump on the right side of my thyroid, and was sent for a FNA towards the end of October. I never heard anything back for a long time so assumed all was well. At the beginning of December I rang the hospital to see if they had my results, & was informed I'd to go on Christmas Eve. Was told then I had a grade 3 tumour & would need partial thyroidectomy to find out for sure if cancer. Then on Christmas Day I caught Covid (all was well I've ctually had worse colds) but then missed my pre op as I was isolating.

Never heard anything back from them so rang again to be told they had to wait so long after Covid due to risk of blood clots on lungs. So I informed them I was on holiday for 2 weeks in March so needed to be fit to drive.

They have just rang me to ask me in next Thursday for a vocal cord check, & to say my surgery is scheduled for the 8th April.

I'm feeling pretty good about it all & not overly worried about the results or the surgery. However I'm anxious about the vocal cord check, as I've heard it's a camera down the throat & I have a terrible gag reflex. Has anyone had this test & can tell me it's not as bad as I imagine?

Thank you

  • Hopefully this will soon be history for both of us, fingers crossed

  • Hi I had my surgery on Friday. I originally left a big reply in the middle of the night after surgery while unable to sleep. Not through pain but people snoring but it didn't post.

I arrived for surgery and was meant to be first in however due to me having covid when they asked me to go in for pre assessment I was then overlooked so had to have full bloods and an ecg before I could go in.

Went into surgery around 10.30am and woke in recovery. I felt very sick and had a headache when I woke so was administered some anti sickness and codeine.

Once on the ward I got into my own pyjamas and was walking to the toilet alone. Be careful of your drain as I kept getting it caught up underneath me and yanking it.

I'm not in a lot of pain. Just a very slight sore throat and a dull ache at the incision sight. And a bit of stiffness in my neck but I'm trying to keep everything moving.

I was discharged at 10am yesterday and just spent the day trying to catch up on sleep as I only got around 1 hour while in hospital.

I am able to eat and drink normally and really don't feel too bad.

  • Hey, good to hear from you. I was thinking of you and wondering how you were. Thank you so much for letting me know. It doesn't sound like it has been too bad? Do you have an appointment to get your results x

  • I've to go back in 4 weeks for my results and check up. He didn't give anything away. I asked if he could tell anything about the lump bit he said no so have to wait and if anything they will get me back in within 6 months and go back in the same incision to get it out

  • When you go back for your result will be when I go in for surgery. Within 6 months??!! Surely they can't wait for that long. Here's hoping neither of us need anything further. Thank you for keeping me updated so far, it's really helping me.

  • Hey Leigh, it looks like we had our surgeries on the same day - hi fellow hemithyroidectomy buddy  How has recovery been for you so far? I am a little worried about my voice; it sounds ok overall, but I can't make high pitched noises, which is worrying me a little! I try to scream, but no sound comes out. Have you found anythign similar?

  • Hi Hope you're doing well? My voice was croaky for a good 2 to 3 days but seems OK now. I can make high pitched screams but I would say I have no power behind my voice at the minute and maybe slightly lower pitched, but my surgeon did say mine was a textbook surgery and he hadn't damaged any nerves. From everything I've read it should all return back to normal within a few months.

I found I couldn't sleep in my bed at all as it hurt my wound so slept on the couch fully propped up. I have managed last 2 nights to sleep in bed though and my throat has finally stopped hurting. I do however have a slight redness and swelling around the wound so think I may have had a small infection.

I'm not in pain now and started driving on Saturday although only a very short distance and can be a bit painful at junctions when checking for cars.

I would maybe get in touch with your surgeon if you have any worries

  • Hi Leigh, I'm doing ok (I think), thank you! I feel like the days are slow, but the weeks are fast - days have just merged into one for me! Thank you for answering my question, yes, that's a good idea - I will check in with my surgeon.

I'm sorry to hear that sleeping has been rough for you; I have been using a V-shaped pillow, which props my head up - perhaps this might help you? Have you managed to get your wound checked out? I hope it resolves soon. I had dissolvable sutures and steri strips on top; the steri strips have not budged yet, weirdly!

When are you due to get your results? I hope all turns out well for us all.

  • I'm feeling really good now. Going back to work on Friday.

I've not had anyone check up other than a call from the thyroid nurse last Wednesday.

I've a telephone appointment on the 12th May for the results.

I only had thr dissolvable stitches woth nothing on top. Have about half of it still scabbed over but there's not really any pain now. I did get sent home with an antibiotic cream to use for 2 weeks, I'm going to pick something up woth vitamin E added on the weekend to rub on my scar

  • I'm glad to hear you're feeling good!

No, me neither - I haven't had any appointments or anything since. I have my appointment to get the results in May too, and I'm starting to feel the anxiety set in. Trying to keep myself distracted.

All the best with your return to work :)
