Calcification on 1st mammogram

I'm very confused about my first mammogram I was referred to the clinic with a lump, which turned out to be a cyst

they told me I had calcification that looked benign but called me back in six weeks

I thought if the calcification is benign then they don't follow up.  I'm 45 so never had a mammogram.

  • Hi!

I am in a similar situation. With me I was referred to breast clinic for nipple discharge. Had a mammogram and found calcifications. They said wanted to see me again in 8 weeks which was actually 6 and was then sent an appointment for a stereotactic biopsy which I had on Monday.

I think they probably check calcifications again to rule out anything nasty but if you were told benign they are likely just being thorough.

I know it's very hard not to stress out and worry. I really hope you have good news when you go for your follow up.

I'm 43 and it was my first mammogram too

  • Hi,

thanks for the reply, I really appreciate your help and reassurance.
Did they say yours was benign? When do you get your results?
the waiting is so tough. X

  • They didn't say either way in my case but everyone is different. I have an appointment relating to the discharge on Monday and they said they will try to get results in time for that but couldn't guarantee it!

    Waiting is the worst!

    Trying to stay positive!

Do you have a date for your next appointment? X

    Hi,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

Many people get recalled after their first mammogram, because there are no previous mammograms to compare with. I expect that they have called you back to see if there are any changes in 6 weeks. Try not to worry about this, as this is a common occurrence.

Here's hoping that all still looks benign when you go back and you can stop worrying. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Hi PositiveT,

As I said to Charlsj, it is fairly common to be called back after a first mammomram, as there are no previous mammograms to compare to. Did they say when your results will be back? I do hope that they come through soon and, that all is well.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi jolamine

thanks for the reply, my concern is that if they saw calcification why didn't they do a biopsy I went a one stop clinic and was told if they found something they would biopsy it? Why wait 6 weeks?
thanks for you help I really appreciate it x

  • Thank you.

I have actually just had a call cancelling my appointment on Monday because results won't be ready and re-arranging for next Friday - so a few extra days to wait.

  • Thats so dissapointing for you, every day seems like an age.

I guess after waiting for 6 weeks you have learned to cope to some degree. I am on day one and have no idea how I'm going to go through 6 weeks like this. How are you feeling about it all? x

  • Hi Positive T,

I am so sorry to hear that your appointment has had to be deferred, giving you a few more days of worry.

    Please keep in contact.

    Kind regards,

    Hi Chrisj,

We can only surmise as to why they decided not to do a biopsy. This is possibly because many calcifications are pre-cancerous, in which case treatment will depend upon the extent of the calcification. Occasionally an invasive cancer can be found within an area of calcification and it looks as if they are checking for any changes within 6 weeks. Here's hoping that they don't find any further changes.

    Kind regards,
