Choice of adjuvant chemo

Hi

I had stage 2 lump removed from previous mascectomy side with 14 lymph nodes all clear 4 weeks ago. My oncologist tells me I definitely need radiotherapy. He also offered adjuvant chemo but as a choice. I have to tell him on Monday (day after tomorrow!). He said the benefit against it recurring if having chemo is 3.9 per cent maximum. This seems very small but I don't really know and wonder what would the figure need to be for chemo to be recommended. Considering I'm told I definitely need radiotherapy but then given a choice for chemo makes me wonder if it's really worth the side effects. Question is (at last!), Is this as small a benefit as appears to someone not in that field of work?

For info, in 2014 I had cancer both sides, one side successful lumpectomy and radiotherapy. Other side mascectomy (this side recurring as above). Also took Anastrasole for 7 years, just stopped due to this episode.

Thank you.

  • I experienced a different cancer - testicular but I had a similar choice after surgery because of the nature of the tumour I had a 40-50% chance of recurrence. Chemotherapy has taken it down to 1-2% or in the words of a letter I got from the oncologist essentially elimited. Those percentages still do not prevent me from worrying everyday about cancer but I would not be able to function if I had not had the chemotherapy. The therapy itself was challenging and side effects severe but they passed quite quickly. The oncologust nurse did say after the treatment that the drugs for testicular chemotherapy are particularly strong not that I can imagine any treatment is pleasant.
