Radiotherapy treatment to armpit

I'm waiting for auxiliary clearance after one positive node found after lumpectomy. I've now realised that where you live means you get different treatment. I've only been offered surgery however I am considering asking for radiotherapy treatment, having looked at recent studies. Could you tell me of your experience of radiotherapy in this instance instead of surgery which comes with a much higher risk of lymphoedema.

thank you

  • Hello Ned22

I'm sorry to hear that you're waiting for an auxiliary clearance after your recent lumpectomy. It's understandable that you want to make sure you're making the best decisions for you regarding treatment. I hope that some of our members who have undergone both node clearance and radiotherapy will reply to share their experiences with you.

In the meantime, I'd suggest giving our team of nurses a call ahead of your next appointment with the Consultant. You'll be able to talk things through with you and offer any information and advice that they can. They may also be able to suggest some questions that you want to raise with your Consultant or points that you've not considered. If you'd like to chat with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

Whatever decision you make I wish you well on this next step of your journey.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi,

Ive seen my surgeon, spoken to Macmillan nurse and read the trial results. It's been really tough as radiotherapy is not offered by my hospital so the only way I can have it is to cancel surgery and go back to MDT and request it. I've decided to go with surgery, but it hasn't been an easy decision.

Thank you for your reply. I've learnt to question everything and take as much advice as I can get.
