Hi.

I'm not sure how I got to be here. A month ago I had my routine annual gastroscopy to check up on my Barrets Oesophagus and today I learnt that the cells the took for analysis are cancerous.

I have been booked in for a course of treatment at Hospital starting in a few weeks time.

I'm not sure if I'm just not nervous or just a bit numb.

I feel a bit of a fraud really, the hospital said it's most probably going to be fine with treatment and reading some of the posts on here it sounds trivial in comparison.

But, here I am so "Hello!"

  • Hello Southwellski

I'm sorry to hear that your recent check-up revealed that you have cancer. It's understandable a really difficult time for you and I'm sure that you have lots of conflicting thoughts and emotions. It's perfectly natural to feel that way and I know many of our members here will understand that. It sounds as if the hospital team is feeling positive that this is treatable which is great news. It can help to try and keep hold of the positive news when so much else feels unsteady at the moment.

You may have already seen this thread and if you have then you will know that there are many people who have been through different stages and treatments for oesophageal cancer. They are a very supportive and friendly group on the forum and I'm sure that if you post on that thread to introduce yourself some of them will reply to say hello! and share their experiences and advice with you.

I also wanted to just let you know that we have a team of nurses here at Cancer Research UK that you can call to talk with if you think that would help at any point. I'm sure they will be happy to offer any advice, information, and support that they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn
