2nd smear with HPV

Last year I had my smear and it came back HPV positive and abnormal cells . I had a colposcopy and biopsy and some cells removed with my next smear being a year later . My result came back ok forward onto this year ....

had my smear and again it has come back HPV positive with abnormal cells .
Obviously I am now stressed and wondered if anyone else has had this happen . I'm thinking of asking for a hysterectomy so I don't have to do this every year .
would love to hear from anyone with experience in this .
thank you x

  • Hi Noddi

It’s absolutely a very common result, so please try not to over worry about it. I’m afraid you can’t ask for a hysterectomy on the basis of having this result-this would be considered overtreatment and not required.

Most importantly, a hysterectomy does not remove HPV from your body, and abnormal cells could still return after a hysterectomy, so unfortunately it’s not a cure for this.

I presume you’ll have another colposcopy on the basis of there being abnormal cells again, but these can still be treated and removed. x
