Leptomeningeal metastasis advice

Hi There,

My Mum has been diagnosed with probable Leptomeningeal metastasis. I have obviously doing some research on this. Does anyone one any advice on how to make sure everything possible is done to help her, maybe things you would have done differently with hindsight ?

In July she was fairly healthy, she started feeling dizzy when standing and also nauseous all the time. We put this down to an inner ear problem or something along those lines, she has since had an Mri, where this was ruled out, and a few abnormalities were found around the base of her skull. She then had a whole body mri where two pea sized lumps were found on her breast. I am taking her to a breat clinic tomorrow where I assume she will have a biopsy.

She is still nauseous and dizzy all the time which is impacting heavily on her mobility, she has lost 2 stone over the last couple of months. I am trying to see I there is anything that can be done with the symptoms she is having, or any general advise that people have on this condition.

many thanks

  • Hello tsekul

I'm sorry to hear that your Mum has probable Leptomeningeal metastasis. It's understandably a difficult time for you both. I hope that the appointment at the breast clinic went well today and that the team was able to give you some useful information about the next steps for your Mum.

The symptoms that you've mentioned are side effects of leptomeningeal metastasis. Hopefully, the team responsible for your Mum's care will be able to help get this under better control over the coming weeks but do make sure you let them know about your concerns. Alternatively, you can chat things through with her GP.

Here at Cancer Research UK, we do have a team of nurses available that you can call to talk to if you think it may be of help. I'm sure they will be happy to offer any advice, information, and support that they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch and let us know how you're both doing.

    Best wishes,
