Husband was newly diagnosed today with rectum cancer

My 60 year old husband was diagnosed today with rectum cancer. We may not know the staging until the new yea, which is nerve wracking. The tumour is 60mm.

He is terrified he will need a colostomy - says he'd rather be dead than have one. I am worried sick as my cousin refused one many years ago and died because of this. I also know of a middle aged  neighbour who had to have one and then had the operation to reverse it and he died.

Is there anyone who has had this cancer and not needed a colostomy and is doing well?  I really need to hear some positivity please.

Will he need chemo?

  • Hi Annealise,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear of the situation with your husband. It sounds like there is a lot of uncertainty at the moment, so hopefully once you're in a position to find out more, and the required next steps, this will help a little.

Unfortunately it will only be the medical team involved in his care who can answer your question about chemo.

I can see you have also posted in the Ask the Nurses section of this forum, so you'll receive a reply from one of our nurses soon.

Meanwhile hopefully you'll receive further replies here, especially if there are others with similar experience.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
