Can you help us speed up diagnosis?

Speeding up cancer diagnosis is an important priority for Cancer Research UK. For many people the earlier their cancer is diagnosed, the better their chance of successful treatment. Survival for some of the most common types of cancer is more than three times higher when the disease is diagnosed in its earlier stages.

One way which might speed up diagnosis is simplifying the way in which a person's symptoms are investigated. Some places in England are trying a new 'route' to investigate a person's symptoms. Instead of referring people to a specialist doctor first, the GP misses out this step and directly orders the tests themselves. The aim is to find out whether this 'route' means people have a fast diagnosis. Cancer Research UK want to know how people feel about this new 'route'. Your views will inform how we support and influence changes to how people are diagnosed.

This survey should take less than ten minutes to complete. We are hoping for as many responses as possible.

I urge everyone to complete the survey and help CRUK collect the evidence needed for this important change in NHS processes. If my GP had been able to order an endoscopy directly I would have been treated almost six months earlier. As a patient with a history of acid reflux I knew that the only suitable test was an endoscopy with biopsies, my GP agreed but had to refer me to an Upper GI consultant surgeon. My original referral sent me down a routine, non-urgent, non-cancer, pathway. I had to wait to see the surgeon who agreed with me. I then had to wait in the non-urgent waiting list for an endoscopy.  By the time I was finally scoped and diagnosed, almost six months had passed and I was into Stage 4.
