How long does my uncle have left?

Hi.

my uncle was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer, which has metastasised to his bones, back in June. He was given 6-12 months. He was on steroids and a hormone injection to try reduce the spread of the cancer and give him a little longer to live but we was told in October that nothing has worked and the cancer has spread rapidly. (Blood results was something like psa level 500+) I'm not sure what that means but I know it isn't good!

he is completely bed bound as he had a partial hip replacement in June (that's how the cancer was found) and he has struggled to walk ever since but the last 2 months he has been confined to his bed. He lives with my grandma (his mum) and sleeps in a special hospital bed she had delivered to her. Macmillan nurses visit 3 times a day and district nurses come out every so often.

some days are better than others, he can eat 2 meals a day and has no pain and seems really bright but other days he hardly eats a thing and just sleeps. He is having more bad days then good now, maybe a slice of toast, some chocolate and half his tea at most, and he spends half the day asleep.

I just don't know how long he has left bless him. The nurses haven't really said what they think when asked. He gets a lot of pain in his hip/back and legs and is taking slow release morphine twice daily and oramorph when needed.

He's been stuck in the same bed, same room for weeks/months now.. in a way, I hope he doesn't have much longer left. It's awful to see him suffer

  • Hello Jruu

I'm sorry to hear about your Uncle's diagnosis. It sounds as though things are quite difficult for you all at the moment. It's good to know that he is being supported by the Macmillan and District Nursing teams.

It can sometimes be difficult for health professionals to give relatives an expectation of how someone's illness may progress and what time frame you may be looking at. You might find it useful to have a look at this information on our website but you're welcome to talk to our nurses if you think it may help. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,
