Worried

Mum was diagnosed with bowel cancer 15 weeks ago and it metastasised to her lungs and liver. She has been given 6-12 months as no treatment was advised.  In the last 2 weeks she has stopped eating and very rarely drinks now too. She was always a tea genie and has a sweet tooth but nothing seems to interest her anymore. She is now complaining of really dry mouth and mucus at the back of her throat. Her breathing is sounding unfamiliar and she seems confused. I think the end of near for her and don't know what to do!

  • From my limited experience (my husband has terminal cancer, probably down the last weeks): your mum might just be dehydrated at the moment, which can push up calcium in the blood and cause confusion. Doctors can sort that with IV fluids and also use bisphosphonates if it's calcium indeed and fluids alone don't do the trick. As for the breathing: unfortunately I have no idea. Definitely worth seeking advice from the GP.

  • Hi Denise,

    Welcome to our forum.

I am so sorry to hear about the situation that you find yourself in. I agree with the advice given by Lowlandcow, but also wanted to suggest that your mum's care team should be able to provide her with cotton buds which are lemon flavoured and will moisten and freshen up her mouth. I cannot remember the name of these but her team will know what I am talking about.

You are doing all that you can for her just by being there and supporting her with your love and compassion on this her final journey. My thoughts and prayers are with you both. Please remember that we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
