Confused with dad's diagnosis

Hi everyone

My dad has alzeimers and has recently been diagnosed with Oesophageal cancer.  One week ago life was semi normal, he could look after himself and wall steadily.  He went in for hospital for a scope as he hasn't been able to eat or drink properly for months.

One week later and we have been told he has weeks/months to live. Now he has been sleeping loads, still not eating much despite having a  stent inserted and is unsteady on his feet.

Does it really happen this quickly? All seems so surreal to see such a change in one week.

  • Welcome to the Cancer Chat community Donnam81 although I'm very sorry about your dad's diagnosis. This must be very tough.

So many of our members will understand how you're feeling at the moment having sadly been through this with their nearest and dearest so you're not alone on this journey and hopefully you'll receive some support and advice from them soon.

If you feel it may help to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses, you're very welcome to give them a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

If you have your dad's permission, you can discuss this with his medical team as well.

Best wishes to you all at this difficult time,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
