Mum very confused and delirious

My mum is on end of life care and has been for the last couple of months. She has recently become very confused and says she wants to go home continuously (over the last couple of weeks) and she is at home. Has anyone else experienced confusion at end of life?

I read your post and wanted to reply. First of all I'm so sorry you're experiencing this and sadly I don't think you are alone in having experienced it.

My mum when having end of life care became very confused. One moment she was telling me she knew she only had a couple of days left and I needed to be brave, but then 5 minutes later she had asked me to make her a hair appointment because she had decided she didn't like her hair style anymore and she wanted to get hair extensions. The last part I often had to leave the room to cry in the toliet because I felt I needed to be strong for her.  The very lovely people on this forum will let you know know their stories too, but I felt it was best to go along with whatever my mum felt at the time. I just said I'd make her a hair appointment, and whatever other things she had asked for because it felt cruel for me to say anything else.  I'm not sure what pain relief your lovely mum is currently recieving, but towards the end my mum was on a lot of morphine through a driver, so the hospice nurses said that would have been adding to her confusion.

I am thinking of you, remember you're not alone and everyone on here is genuinely so kind and will be here to support you whenever you need, as they understand.

Lots of love to you xxx

  • This is exactly what I experienced yesterday. She has become confused before due to infection but just talking calmly settled her but this did not work yesterday it was horrendous. Hospice team administered morphine and now she is peaceful. I'm really sorry regarding your circumstances, big hugs x
