how long does my friend have?

I know it's like asking how long is a piece of string but i'm trying to prepare myself. My best friend is 46 and was diagnosed a year ago with terminal cancer that looks to have started in the anus and was in her groin lymph, liver and lungs too.

She had 6 months of chemo and then 5 weeks of daily radiotherapy for the pelvic area along with a different kind of chemo. It is only a few months since that finished but a recent scan shows recurrence in her groin and lungs (the cancer here had all but disappeared) and the liver tumours are growing again too (chemo only seemed to have minimal effect on these).

She has looked shocking  but not actually felt poorly - however - she is now starting to feel unwell and suffering some stomach pain and nausea as well as increasing tiredness. She has mild athsma but has an awful cough and her chest sounds terrible. She is also very thin. The consultant was hoping she'd have another 3 or 6 months before re starting treatment but she is now having ANOTHER 6 months of chemo to start immediately. She is battling drug addiction too.

She has never wanted to know life expectancy etc but i just wondered if anyone had experienced similar and at this stage - the length of time she has, at best, got left. I am hoping the chemo will buy her more time but i am also sure that pretty much constant chemo must weaken the body too.

  • Hello Jo.bs

I'm sorry to hear about your friend's situation. It sounds like it's been a difficult time for you both.

As you've already said, it's impossible for us to say what kind of prognosis she may have but I wonder if you might find it helpful to talk things through with one of our team of nurses. I'm sure they would be happy to try and offer any advice and support that they could. If you'd like to chat with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,
