Dads terminal esophageal cancer

Hi there, so my Dad has stage 4 esophageal cancer that spread to his lungs, found out in September, he has had cancer before & had a big operation 8 years ago & radiotherapy so chemo is only option! He had 6 rounds & it worked better than they ever imagined as it blasted a 6cm tumour into just bits & his lungs into bits too but unfortunately it has grown back after only a few weeks! Gutted!

There is no talk of more chemo, they said they will scan again in July, this is nearly May so they must think he will be alive then? He sounded so down telling me after remaining so positive throughout despite a number of falls, a clot, stent issues...

Atleast we will get to see him indoors in a few weeks so that's something, it's been so hard not seeing him properly! He is 66, I'm 42, this is the hardest thing I've gone through!

Anyone had it grow back so quick after shrinking?  He doesn't want to ask time scales, I'd rather know! I'm thinking a few months? The Doctor was shocked it even shrunk, they weren't even going to do it because they didnt think there was any point!

Thank you so much in advance.

  • Hi Kazakp, we haven't got this far yet so I can't tell you anything. My Dad has had 6 rounds of chemotherapy after being diagnosid with stage 4 esophageal cancer - scans shown that there had been reductions in his lymph nodes which was very promoising and he could swallow much better after the second round of chemotherapy - in the last couople of weeks my Dad's swallowing has become a real problem to the point now where he can only have liquids. It's encouraging that you Dad has been through a similar experience before - i guess this shows he is very strong, good luck.

  • Hi,

I'm 31, my dad was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer about 6 weeks ago.

He went to have a stent put in, but that was a complete failure. No stent, instead he had a feeding tube put in. That totally freaked my dad out because at the time he could still eat solids and was expecting to be able to eat normally again. Well, 3 weeks later he cat even drink water, relys solely on tube feeding in his duodenum and can't talk he has so little energy. He managed to get into a hospice, miles and miles from his house. He's got stage 4 cancer, it has spread to his lungs. And today I've found out he's got jaundice and has secondary liver cancer. Because of coronavirus I haven't seen my dad since January 2020. I had planned to go up this weekend, but dad got too ill and my mum cancelled the visit.

It just seems unfathomable to me in 6 weeks the *** sky's fallen in.

My dad has had no previous cancer. No chemotherapy. I doubt he'll have any now, he's too poorly. Just what the *** honestly. Even when we found out he had cancer he was given about a year, but that just doesn't seem likely now. Why is it so quick??????? And why is there no way of diagnosing this until it's too late. It's just wrong.

I'm another daughter who's life has been shredded by this.

I still can't even process it.

  • Hi pinkhair, so sorry to hear your story, I understand (even though I've not used myself) you can call the nurses on this site and they may be able to give you more info and offer some support.  Our oncologist told my Dad that his stage 4 was not treatable so no operation would be considered but did arrange 6 cycles of chemotherapy, we are 8 months down the line... so I guess what I'm trying to say is don't give up hope, I hope your Dad has some good luck.

  • Oh Pinkhair I'm so sorry to hear how fast your Dad has deteriorated, I feel very lucky we have had 6 months & managed doorstep visits!

It is a brutal disease, life can be so unfair, sending you so much love

  • So sorry to hear about your Dad. It's so hard to watch.

My Dad seems to be doing really well as he can still eat. When they started the chemo they said it was to stop it growing do to find out it had shrunk away I thought we had a miracle, so to find out it grew back after weeks was a blow!

When he had mouth cancer 8 years ago they said he wouldn't eat or talk again but after 2 ops & radiotherapy he can do both no bother then he got his 5 years all clear but then to get it again really sucks! I'm holding onto hope of him doing better than they think but I feel like he may bot have much fight left in him!
