Signet ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) stomach cancer

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone here had the experience to share with this type of rare cancer.

My dad was diagnosed with signet ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) stomach cancer in January 2021. He had the surgery to remove two third of his stomach in March 2021 and is now recovering from it.

My brother and I are discussing the next steps. We have consulted a few doctors, most agreed he'd only have 6-12 months left as he is now in late Stage 3.

Does anyone know whether chemotherapy or radiotherapy would help lengthen his time? We know the process itself is not pleasant so really need ti weigh up different things here.

Many thanks in advance.

Toby

  • Hi Anne

I am sorry about your dad too. I hope he will find a good chemo.

My dad is doing okay after the op. We have not made a decision about doing chemo or not. We want to time it right from the psychological perspective. I will let you know once I have more info.

And if you get share your dad's chemo experience that would be much appreciated.

    All the best,

    Toby

  • Hi Anne, I have recently been diagnosed with signet ring cancer in my stomach, it took an emergency operation in June to find it, even though I had had countless tests and was told that everything was clear and there was nothing wrong. I have ended up with a stoma which is not reversible and the decision whether to have chemo or not at the moment. I must admit I am scared and fearful of going ahead with this treatment as it seems that it will not extend my life. What time I have left I want to enjoy and I  feel well at the moment. I am still weighing the pros and cons. Mine is inoperative as well. This a hard decision for any of us to make.

  • Hi Toby

    Thanks for replying.

There's about a further two week wait now while my dad recovers from being given a stoma, after that he'll be given an appointment to assess if chemo will help at all.

Will let you know his experience if he starts it.

  • Hi

Yes, it is such a hard decision.

Do you mind me asking if you thought about seeking a second opinion when told it was inoperable.

I have done some research as with my dad it hasn't spread to major organs but he has been told inoperable.  I have found cancer centres in England that give examples of operating on rare cancers in stomach/bowel. But they mention a different rare cancer, never signet ring cell.

  • Hi Anne,

    Thanks for sharing your story.

My mother was diagnosed with the same cancer as your dad (SRCC) stomach cancer stage 4. It's been suspected the spread has gone to the abdomen lining but no other vital organs.

I'm researching into effective treatments that could be more effective and less taxing on the body. My mother is seriously underweight, can't eat much so I fear chemo would do worse than good. What treatments did your dad undergo and how effective have they been?

I appreciate your help and guidance.

    Best
