Laryngeal cancer end stages

I'm looking to hear people's experiences of end of life laryngeal cancer, as I need to know what to expect. My brother (55) has stage 4 laryngeal cancer. First diagnosed June 2018 when the tumour was on the base of his tongue and we were told 100% curable. He had chemo amd radio and it did disappear for a year, then came back Nov 2019 on his supraglottis amd is very aggressive and inoperable. He had 8 more sessions of chemo last year but he's been told for a while now that it is terminal.

He currently is struggling very much to breathe, he has terrible stridor, and severe pain. In the next few days they are going to start him on immunotherapy to try to improve his quality of life, but I'm finding it difficult to think this will improve anything. I am terrified that he is literally going to suffocate to death with the blockage in his airway. I don't understand why they are not just doing a tracheostomy to make it easier for him to breathe, but I'm presuming there is a good reason why they can't do it.

I would be grateful to hear anyone's experiences of a similar situation, amd also how long they lived at this stage. To me, we're approaching the end with this, but my mum is refusing to believe they won't cure him.

  • Hi Hermana,

I'm sorry to hear of what your brother and all of you are going through with this - I can only imagine how difficult it must be. Firstly if you have any questions or concerns about treatment, do discuss this with your brother's specialist so you have the answers you need.

If anyone here has any similar experience to share, hopefully they'll be along soon.

We're always here for support on the forum if you need it at any point.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
