Bowel Cancer

Hi all,

my father who is 59 was diagnosed 3 years ago with  stage 4 bowel cancer that has spread to his liver. He had a bowel tumor removal surgery two days ago and they were unable to remove it as it was too big. Chemo doesn't seem to be reducing his bowel tumor. He also had a type of radiation on his liver that didn't shrink the liver tumors but it hasn't gotten bigger.
I'm 22 and find it very hard to understand the medical jargon and sometimes unsure of what's going on and feel my family aren't telling me if I should prepare myself for if he is going to die. I don't know if he is dying. He is slighty weak but isn't bed ridden or anything.
I'm just wondering has anyone gone through the same type of cancer and if they have had any success.

  • Hello Hannah,

Stage 4 cancer is very serious and that it as spread to his liver over the 3 years since diagnosis and with the fact they were unable to remove the tumour, along with Chemotherapy and radiation not getting results is not looking good.

All people (as I have) who have gone through the difficulties of their loved ones battling cancer have various experiences and different  outcomes.

Think you need to have a heart to heart talk with your family (Mum?) and let them know all your concerns and worries.

    Best Wishes,.

  • Hello Hannah,

as a recovered bowel and liver cancer patient,l am struggling to get my head around the fact that it has been 3 years from stage 4 diagnosis to surgery,3 months would seem more like the norm. All l can think that radio and chemo has fought hard over a long period to hold spread in check, and that recent attempted surgery was a nothing to lose option. That in itself would suggest that your fathers situation is increasingly dire.l am sorry for all the pain you and your family have been through but if the chemo is failing to shrink the tumour or hold it in check, and it has become so large removal is impossible, then with outward progression to other organs, the position must be considered extremely bleak.

Please remember that although l speak with a horses mouth,it is not coupled to a surgeons brain ,and they really would be the ones that have a far better overview of your fathers position.Once again l am truly sorry for your tremendous difficulties,

                                         David
