less than 2 months to live.

Hi everyone. My story my name is Gary I am 44 years old and have terminal cancer. I was a bodybuilder and runner. I ran half and full marathons and was super fit. My story started back in Feb 2019 when I suffered a PE in my lungs nearly killed me thankfully I survived. Consultant told me because it was unprovoked and I was in great shape that more tests would need to be done. Told me that they is a chance I could have cancer. So bloods  chest x ray was done came back ok. I was told that the chance of me having cancer was now very low but consultant told me to keep an eye of for any symptoms . Got back to exercising was doing good until August 2019 when I noticed 2 shimmering spots in each eye. I put my fingers in those spots and top of my fingers disappeared. So I had developed 2 blind spots in each eye. Went to the opticians who found nothing wrong so was baffled. In December 2019 I started having bowel problems and bled heavily from my bum so got in touch with doctor who assured me it was nothing. Fast forward to March last year and my bowels started acting up again plus I had noticed I could no longer see red and had developed light sensitivity. Went back to opticians who still could find nothing wrong. So went back to doctor told him what was happening with my bowels and eyesight he examined me and again told me not to worry. I was now struggling with my bodybuilding and running. I used to run 40 miles a week at 7 min mile pace now was doing half that and running 9 min mile pace. By July I was now running about 10 miles a week and lifting half of what I used to. My bowels would be ok for a while then not good also I had now developed constant flashing and hundreds moving spots in my vision. So went back to opticians same again could find nothing wrong. My doctor was still not concerned. I was now a mess I told doctor I believe I have bowel cancer he told me not to be silly. So in September I now could no longer run or lift and was losing weight. I am in the UK so health care is free over here but I was getting no help. I went to accident and emergency told them all that was happening begging them for scans but did bloods. Bloods came back ok so told me to go home. My girlfriend was beside herself she could see I was deteriorating and no doctors would do a thing. So we went private. Saw a consultant told him everything and he was shocked that nothing had been done. The consultant examined me and asked if he could take a better look at my fingers. I was baffled why he would want to but said yes. He told me and I had no idea that I had finger clubbing. He arranged for a CT scan chest abdo and pelvis, also a colonoscopy and numerous different blood tests. He also arranged for me to see a retina expert. Saw retina expert within days told him everything he did a eye exam and a oct scan. He called me back in and told me he suspects what may be wrong with my eyes. From my symptoms and from what he saw on oct scan he thinks I may have cancer autoimmune retinapathy. Told me it is very rare. So he is gonna arrange an erg and multi focal erg. I got CT scans and colonoscopy done then went for erg the next day. Few days later had to go for all my results. I was told I had stage 4 bowel and lung cancer that has spread into my nodes to. I also had cancer retinapathy. I Was told nothing could be done and nothing can be done for retinapathy to. I would go blind within months thankfully still have some vision. So thats my story I am so angry at my doctor and terrified of dying.

  • this is terrible, and just shows you if you pay you get the best treatment, my dad also got let down by the NHS they found cancer when he is was in for a routine stent to his heart but they didnt call him back to tell him and they didnt send his notes to his doctor "clerical error" they called in 2 years later dad was terminal with bladder and lung cancer and he died 9month later ... you have to fight for some treatment you are you and fit and you could prolong the time you have left

    keep fighting

  • Oh really sorry to read your story this morning....

Seems like you did all you could as you went along  it's that nagging feeling where you can feel cheated because they didn't take the time to listen to you properly.  I hope you find some strength and support on here and I hope your catalogue of errors gets back to the relevant GP/s who dismissed it.

I really do wish you and your family all the best. x

  • Hi Gary ,What a nightmare for you and terrible way you have been treated.

I'm so sorry for you and your family and hope you can find peace in yourself .

I'm trying face up to my possible terminal diagnosis too but know in myself I'm dying and getting worse by the day.

I've had prostate cancer but all clear after 7 years and took me 9 months fighting to get me a diagnosis as doctors wouldn't except I was ill and even sent me to be mentally assessed .

I'm now in worse position and know I'm not making it through this one as in cancer .I do hope you find away of coping and think your a brave man to share your story.
