Terminal stomach cancer. What to expect

So this is a bit long winded. But my grandma who lives with me was taken to hospital with suspected stroke 4 weeks ago. Stroke was ruled out straight away. Blood test confirmed aneamia. 4 blood transfusions and 2 iron transfusions later... Further tests to distinguish the cause (a ct, mri and camera and biopsy) confirmed terminal stomach cancer. A lesion the whole way across the stomach and touching the liver. 3 to 6 months was the prognosis. However since the transfusions gran seems to have alot more energy shes out and about walking the dog. Mowing the lawn (shes 80) so ita hard to believe this is true. I was just wondering if anyone else has been in the same situation. I just want honesty. She was on deaths door before the transfusions. But since shes had them, even since diagnosis shes been fine. I however, know someone who passed away last week after being diagnosed with liver cancer in August and it all happened so quickly. I just want to know others experience has it happened quick? Slow? Has timescale been correct after thinking it cannot be true? I just feel very unsupported fromthe hospital and drs. Thank you ️

  • Hello Stacie8811

I'm sorry to hear about your Grandma's diganosis although it's good to hear that she's feeling much better since her transfusions.

When a Consultant gives a prognosis it is a guestimate of sorts based on their knowledge and experince along with the patients condition. Sometimes things progress more rapidly and sometimes more slowly. It's understandable that you're worried and would like some more certainty in the answers however it's not always possible.

I wonder if you might find it helpful to have a chat with one of our nurses. I'm sure that if you give them a call that they will be able to give you some advice and support that will help. If you'd like to chat to hem then they are available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

In the meantime I hope that your Grandma continues to feel well and is comfortable.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn
