Survivors guilt, now mum's diagnosed & nothing can be done

So I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer 7yrs ago I was basically ill and cured before I even knew it, I was told this in October my birthday month, now I've just be told that my mum is terminal but they will keep trying then a week later there is nothing anyone can done and it will be a matter of weeks, I don't know what to do! Why did I beat it but she isn't?? How can I survive and she can't?? Please has anyone else been in this situation??

p.s mum isn't even 60 yet

  • Hello Tricki

I'm sorry to hear about your Mum's diagnosis and the recent news that there are no further treatment options available for her. It's understandably a difficult time for you all.

I think lots of of our members here will be know the "why me?" thoughts that you've mentioned. It's not uncommon for those who have successfully been through a journey with cancer to wonder why it was that way for them and not for others.

It can help to talk to someone about how you're feeling in a safe environment and I'd suggest that you have a think about giving our team of nurses a call. I'm sure that they will be able to offer you some advice and support. If you'd like to speak to them they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Sending you and your Mum my best wishes,
