Palliative chemotherapy

Hi all,

My dad was given weeks to live on the 9th June. He was given the option to have chemo so he has had 4 rounds and a CT scan yesterday. He recieved the results yesterday from the oncologist and the cancer hasnt strunk nor has it got any bigger. The oncologist said she would need to said down with 4 other doctors to discuss a plan for dad moving forward. Whether it be to continue or to stop the chemotherapy. Does anyone have any experience with this? Why would chemo be stopped if its controlling the cancer?

I'm so worried and scared I would do anything to take any my dads pain.

Xx

  • Hi i am sorry to read about your dad.I was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer with mets in my lumgs liver and kidney.that was in May 2019!I am on weekly chemo.since August 2019 and liver and kidney are clear now.the only cancer is few lung.nodules.which are stable or still shrinking.I am doing well on chemo,I am fit and i even work 2xweek.

You should request questions why they want to stop the chemo. Is your dad doing ok with chemo?Does he have any side effects?I am supposed to be on palliative chemo too and look how long I am doing it.

Its true that I am only 43 but you and your dad should fight for the treatment.sometimes when they see an older person they like them to "write them off".

I am here for chat if you would.like to.

  • Hi Denise,

Its lovely to hear you are doing amazing with your chemo! My dad has done great having his treatment he is 70 and has lost a fair bit of weight so he has been receiving a low dose of it. He hasnt had any side effects either. I'm not sure why they wouldn't carry on controlling the cancer. Do you?  The primary is in his neck with Mets in liver and bowel. During the meeting yesterday with the oncologist she didnt mention about the cancer in his liver or bowel she just focused on the neck cancer which baffled me.

I will make sure he asks questions.

    Thank you xx
