Mum diagnosed with Stage 4 lung Cancer

Hi all,

My mun has today been diagnoses with Stage 4 lung cancer having spread to her lymph nodes, glands and bones. We have been advised the best form of treatment is Chemo. While we have come to terms with the fact its terminal and that the chemo is only to prevent and not cure.

I wanted to ask the nurse but didnt like to ask in front of my mum. When her 4 rounds of Chemo end and the cancer has shrunk. Why does she then die? Does the cancer just grow back as it is now and brings the end that way? Are we literally just delaying the inevitable?

My dad dies of Pancreatic cancer last year but he didn't even get as far as chemo, so I'm not sure what to expect?

Any one that can give me some advice or experiences would be most helpful

Thanks

David

  • Hi David

I'm very sorry to hear about your mum. Have you been given a nurse that you can call to ask your questions?

My uncle was also recently been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and he hasn't been offered any treatment at all. Can I ask, did your mum have a biopsy?

    Best Wishes

  • Hi

I'm sorry to hear of your uncle, my mother did get details of a nurse who spoke with us at the time. I just didn't want to ask about death in front of my mum.

With regards to her treatment by mum had a shortness of breath for about a week then complained of a pain in her ribs/back she went to hospital got an X Ray and they advised Lung Cancer. She has since been for a Bronchoscopy followed by a PET Scan. I believe a biopsy was taken during the bronchoscopy. It was following the results of these we were told about the fact its terminal and then about the Chemo therapy.

  • Hi David

My Dad was diagnosed with very late Stage Lung Cancer in 2002.

He had Pneumonia in the January and appeared very close to death at that point.

The Chemo and steroids he was in got him pretty much back to normal for a few months and he passed away in the September of that year.

The Chemo will shrink tumours and hopefully keep things at bay for a a good few months.

The Cancer will most likely grow back over time and spread to new places potentially after all treatments have been exhausted

  • Thank you for your post this gives me a better idea of what to expect.

  • Hi David,

Im so sorry to hear this. My dad was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer in January last year. At one point he was told he could have treatment and that it would shrink the tumour for a few months but then the cancer would return as they said it always did in that situation so by having treatment you ae buying time which from what I remember is a few months. My dad didnt have treatment though and he died in September. I can only say to you that it is absolutely heart breaking and the only support I had was from the amazing people on here and I am so sure everyone will be here for you if you need us or just feel like talking.

    Best wishes,

    MiGi

  • Thanks for the advice this is a great help.

  • Hi David, I have just finished 4 rounds of chemo for lung cancer. Results were good as tumour and lymph nodes have shrunk. I am now going to have maintenance chemo to try and keep it at bay. Hope your mum gets good results from her chemo.

                                Best wishes

                                 Alan.

  • Hi Alan

Thanks so much for taking the time to message. I'm sorry to hear of your illness.

How are you feeling after the Chemo?

    Thanks

    David

  • Hi David, I had fatigue, nausea, joint pain and dry eyes with my chemo. I didn't lose my hair though. Although I had nausea I wasn't sick as I was given anti sickness tablets. Hope this helps.

                                      Alan.

  • Thanks for the details Alan, it's a massive help in trying to determine what the future holds.

I hope you keep as well as possible

    Thanks
