To have palliative chemo or not?

My mum has recently been diagnosed with terminal stage 4 Oesophagus cancer and they have offered palliative chemotherapy. We just want to hear from others is it worth going for as my mums a bit fed up of it all now as she's already done chemoradiotherapy?

advice really appreciated :) thank you

  • Hi Char92,

I was diagnosed with stage 4 Oesophageal cancer in October 2018, and was told on average I'd have 5 months without treatment or around 11 with, 21 months later I'm still here. Initially I had chemo for six months every three weeks, then I had a break for six months. I started chemo and targeted therapy again last October, stopped at the beginning of Covid 19, then started up again two weeks ago. Yes, it's been dreadful but without it, I wouldn't have seen one of my daughters graduate as an officer in the RAF, see my other daughter get married two weeks ago, and now I'm optimistic that I'll see my son graduate from uni next summer. Encourage your Mum to keep going, there are developments happening all the time, as my Professor said, 'never give up hope'

  • Thank you very much for the advice it's much appreciated and very helpful I have passed it on to my mum.
