Mum with Stage 4 Terminal Oesophageal Cancer

Hello, my mum has recently been diagnosed with stage 4 Oesophageal cancer, the doctors are offering a stent, she doesn't know whether to go ahead with it or not as she is fed up of pain now. She is currently on a jejunostomy feeding tube. Can anyone offer advise whether it is worth her having the stent put in, also if she had it done what do side effects involve, how long for etc? Thank you

  • Hi char92,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm very sorry to read about your mum and I hope you're getting on OK. Unfortunately I'm not able to advise on this, although there is some information on our website here which may be helpful.

Otherwise, do of course discuss any medical questions specific to your mum with her doctor or specialist if you can.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • My husband had the same diagnosis and had the stent fitted. He is still here 18 months later and can swallow food without pain. The side effects are if he swallows too much in one go then he canfind this hard and meaty foods can get stuck, but only for a little while, during this time he swallows continuously and drinks to relieve the blockage.i hope this helps, take care, thankyou

  • Thank you very much for responding I hope you don't mind me asking but has he been having palliative Chemotherapy? It's just my mum doesn't know whether to have it or not?

    kind regards
