Lung cancer spread no treatment

Hello

My dad 82 was fit and well till 4 weeks ago, he woke up and was unsteady on his feet called gp who saod didnt think its a stroke and to see how it goes.

Same thing happened 2 weeks later so gp sent to a and e.

Kept in 2 days comfirmed with stroke. And looked like another older one as well on scan.

Had chest xray while in which saw a legion.

Booked in for scans following week and sent home.

On the saturday he slipped off the side of the bed couldnt fell his arm or leg. Ambulance came and took him in. Drs said a seizure from the stroke.

Mum called on monday to ask how he was after stroke who ever answered phone said not a stroke its a brain tumor.

She asked for dr to call who then said lung cancer spread to brain and liver and 2 months to live.

This is all from a scan. Cancelled mri and put him on steroids and anti seizure drugs.

Not been offered any treatment or even a biopsy.

His actually on stroke ward.

Apart from the numbness in his arm and leg he hasnt had a single sympton no cough no headaches litrally nothing. Cooks shops walks dog everyday. And such a keen gardener which looks like chelsea flower show.

Any ideas?

  • Went to see mum and dad today. My dad absolutely looks amazing, he did lose 6lb in weight in first 2 weeks after diagnosis but has now put 4lb on.

Only symptom is that numbish foot which he thinks is from the stroke.

I do work with stoke patients so I do believe his right on that.

His got a great appetite, still doing everything his always done, so makes even less sense that he can have cancer in so many places.

Biopsy is monday so will be glad to get thst out the way. x

  • Biospy went well, results will hopefully be Friday but if not monday so not as long as we first thought. Took 4 samples.

Dad still doing well luckly no pain from Biospy. X

  • Hi Emz

    Hows your dad doing?

  • Thank you Ollie.

How is your dad and how are you? Xx

  • We are fine thank you, no biospy results yet but hopefully hear soon. No idea if it will be a phonecall or appointment.

Going to see mum and dad tomorrow so will update properly then.

How are you doing, ive been thinking about you everyday xx

  • Dad, wasnt feeling to great this morning a bit wobbly on legs.

Mum called Gp and cancer nurses as she also wanted to ask about more codine as he had nearly ran out.

Gp rang back first and said to slightly up his dose of steroid for a week.

Mum then asked about another precription for codeine as he has nearly ran out.

The gp said he will give a few more as he doesnt like to give many as they are to expensive.

Im absolutely horrified at this how can they deny someone pain relief?

My mum then offered to pay but gp said not allowed to sell them.

Next call cancer nurse called back didnt know nothing about my dad at all.

No biospy back she said well hopefully tbey will be back by friday and they can then discuss plan at meeting.

If not will have to be week after.

Considering he has only 6 to 8 weeks to live according to drs they are not trying to hurry things along.

5 weeks today since they first told us its cancer.

Its like being in some nightmare we cant wake up from. X

  • Hi Ollie,

I have just read through your post and was wondering how everything went with the biopsy results for your dad?

Claire, sorry to hear about your mum.

My grandad is in his final days of lung cancer, he is no longer awake or eating or drinking, and has been on a morphine pump for the last 24 hours. I have come home for a shower and change of clothes and heading back to him. Horrible sitting around his bed waiting for him to die but also horrendous watching him like this.

  • So sorry to hear about your grandad. Must be awful waiting for him to die.

My dads biospy showed the cancer started in the lung.

They are still waiting for a couple of results which offer a 5% chance of tablet chemo working.

His foot is still numb so wobbly on his legs but apart from backache every now and then he is still chugging along nicely.

Dr still thinks less that a month to live so he might suddenly go down hill which I hope not.

I do hope your grandad passes peacefully will be thinking of you xx

  • With my grandad he was diagnosed in November last year and given 2-12 months, there was no treatment offered, just palliative care. He had been slowly losing weight and in some pain but was given morphine tablets which seemed to keep the pain down, and liquid morphine for when he was coughing. He was doing ok until about a month ago, where he was rapidly getting weaker and more tired, then he got a water infection which seemed to take what little strength he had left and made him really unwell and very confused. Antibiotics helped but he didn't recover to where he was before this, then the last 10 days he has rapidly gone downhill fast, with the last 2 days spend sleeping and he lost his speech. He died this evening peacefully at home.
