Dad’s Final Days

Hi, I haven’t posted to this forum since I lost my mum in February 2017 to lung cancer and now my lovely dad is nearing the end of his long illness with primary liver cancer which, in November last year, we learned had grown and also spread to the nodes in his lungs.

Dad went into a care home to live permanently at Christmas following him being so poorly with Biliary Sepsis but since he was in the care home he was doing really well up until yesterday when the pain has started. Up until yesterday he hasn’t suffered with any pain, thankfully, but the care home called to tell me today that he was being given morphine via a butterfly syringe and allowed me a visit. As we have been unable to see dad since before lockdown is was so hard to see him so frail and he has lost a great deal of weight, just skin and bones.

The care home are talking about putting him on a syringe driver but allowing myself and my brother to visit individually for 90 minutes each day.  I just don’t want him to suffer any longer.  So sad.

  • Oh Sandra1963 I am so sorry to hear that your dad has been in so much pain recently. I am pleased though that the care home allowed you to visit him. It must have been great comfort to him to see you and your brother. It's so sad that he is so frail at the moment and has lost so much weight. How heartbreaking this must be for you and your brother.

I just wanted you to know that you are not alone - so many on this forum have been in this position recently having had to watch a loved one deteriorate and they will know how heartbreaking the current situation is for you and your family.

We're thinking of you and your family during this really difficult time.

    Best wishes,
